Houart R. 2023. The Genus Enixotrophon (Gastropoda: Muricidae: Pagodulinae): an Update on Species from the Tropical Indo-West Pacific. Venus (Japanese journal of Malacology) 81(1-4): 1-26. DOI:DOI: https://doi.org/10.18941/venus.81.1-4_1
Résumé [+] [-]Fifteen species of Enixotrophon collected during expeditions of the Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos programme are reported from the Indo-West Pacific. All are illustrated using the holotypes and material collected during more than 30 years. The species were collected in the bathyal zone, living specimens occurring in depths from 198 to 1,280 m, with a majority between 250 and 800 m. One new combination, Enixotrophon pistillum (Barnard, 1959), is introduced; Trophon johannthielei Barnard, 1959 and Trophonopsis ziczac Tiba, 1981 are synonymised with E. pulchellus (Schepman, 1911). New geographical distribution data are presented for E. lochi (Marshall & Houart, 2011), E. pistillum, E. planispinus (E.A. Smith, 1906), E. plicilaminatus (Verco, 1909), E. pulchellus (Schepman, 1911) and E. sansibaricus (Thiele, 1925). Six species are recorded from the New Caledonia region, E. lochi, E. multigradus (Houart, 1990), E. obtuseliratus (Schepman, 1911), E. plicilaminatus (Verco, 1909), E. procerus (Houart, 2001) and E. pulchellus (Schepman, 1911). E. karubar n. sp. is described from Indonesia and one subadult specimen collected in the Mozambique Channel during the MAINBAZA expedition remains unidentified (Enixotrophon sp. cf. E. sansibaricus).

Kantor Y.I., Fedosov A.E., Kosyan A.R., Puillandre N., Sorokin P.A., Kano Y., Clark R. & Bouchet P. 2022. Molecular phylogeny and revised classification of the Buccinoidea (Neogastropoda). Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 194(3): 789-857. DOI:10.1093/zoolinnean/zlab031
Résumé [+] [-]Abstract The superfamily Buccinoidea is distributed across the oceans of the world from the Arctic Ocean to the Antarctic and from intertidal to abyssal depths. It encompasses 3351 recent species in 337 genera. The latest taxonomic account recognized eight full families. For the first time, the monophyly of the superfamily and the relationships among the families are tested with molecular data supplemented by anatomical and radula data. Five genetic markers were used: fragments of mitochondrial COI, 16S rRNA, 12S rRNA and nuclear Histone 3 (H3) and 28S rRNA genes (for 225 species of 117 genera). Our analysis recovered Buccinoidea monophyletic in Bayesian analyses. The relationships between the formerly recognized families and subfamilies are drastically revised and a new classification of the superfamily is here proposed, now including 20 taxa of family rank and 23 subfamilies. Five new families (Chauvetiidae, Dolicholatiridae, Eosiphonidae, Prodotiidae and Retimohniidae) and one subfamily of Nassariidae (Tomliniinae) are described. Austrosiphonidae and Tudiclidae are resurrected from synonymy and employed in a new taxonomical extension. All but 40 recent genera are reclassified. Our results demonstrate that anatomy is rather uniform within the superfamily. With exceptions, the rather uniform radular morphology alone does not allow the allocation of genera to a particular family without additional molecular data.

Lee H., Puillandre N., Kano Y., Chen W.J. & Samadi S. 2022. Biodiversity and phylogeny of Cocculinidae (Gastropoda: Cocculinida) in the Indo-West Pacific. Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 196(1): 366-392. DOI:10.1093/zoolinnean/zlac023
Résumé [+] [-]Abstract The family Cocculinidae (Gastropoda: Cocculinida) consists of small, usually colourless benthic limpets living primarily at depths below 100 m, and on decaying plant or animal remains. These habitats are difficult to sample and the knowledge about Cocculinidae species diversity, biogeography, ecology and evolution is therefore poor. To explore the species diversity of the Cocculinidae, we examined 499 specimens collected from 196 sites, mainly explored during expeditions of the ‘Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos’ programme in the Indo-West Pacific (IWP). To propose a species hypotheses, we used an integrated approach to taxonomy in which we combined DNA-based methods, with morphological, geographical and ecological considerations. To classify the species hypotheses into genera, we used a combination of one mitochondrial and two nuclear gene fragments to reconstruct a phylogenetic tree. We then used six morphological characters to diagnose the identified genera. Our results revealed an exceptionally high diversity of IWP Cocculinidae, with 51 species hypotheses that were mostly not assigned to available species names. We also discovered a previously unknown type of copulatory structure in the group. At a higher taxonomic level, we identified ten main clades in the family. Although six of them matched existing genera, four others should be regarded as new genera awaiting formal description.

Ng S.L., Straube N., Liu K.M. & Joung S.J. 2025. Confusions across the hemispheres: Taxonomic re-evaluation of two lanternshark species, Etmopterus lucifer and E. molleri (Squaliformes: Etmopteridae). Vertebrate Zoology 75: 59-86. DOI:10.3897/vz.75.e126067
Résumé [+] [-]The shark genus Etmopterus is the most species-rich shark genus, however, several of its species level taxa pose taxonomic challenges. Especially the Etmopterus lucifer species group is in need of a taxonomic re-evaluation. In the present study, we review the status of E. lucifer and E. molleri from the north- and southwestern Pacific applying an integrative taxonomic approach. Our dataset comprises 100 morphological characters and the mitochondrial NADH2 marker (1,010 bp) for 178 and 83 specimens, respectively. Our results show that E. lucifer and E. molleri from the Northwestern Pacific are distinct from specimens sampled in the Southwestern Pacific. We therefore (1) resurrect E. abernethyi for specimens in the southwestern Pacific hitherto assigned to E. lucifer, (2) synonymize the Northwestern Pacific E. burgessi with E. lucifer and (3) resurrect E. schmidti for specimens in the Northwestern Pacific hitherto assigned to E. molleri. A lectotype is designated herein for E. lucifer. Redescriptions of the four valid species, E. abernethyi, E. lucifer, E. molleri, and E. schmidti, are given and an updated key to all members of the E. lucifer group from the central Indo-Pacific is provided. The current division of the E. lucifer subgroups is challenged, as the key character, the relative length of flank-marking branches, shows great intraspecific variation.
